Gameplay tips and progression |
First of, I explain. I don't have the game but hopefully I will acquire the NA version early-September. Thus, I thought about what kind of character I wanted to make. I studied other builds for some time and decided on a BBS build. Then a spellsword. Then a faith build. I couldn't make a decision. Then I thought my BBS character some more after watching some epic PVP videos and thought back to an old comment on Nick1Nintendo's build about using the Blueblood Sword. To which the response was of course no. The sword is reliant on luck obviously. But what if it doesn't have to? If I recall, the base AR on a BBS (7 luck) is something like 250ish. Or in other words, crap. Moon weapons do way better than that. But can they be enchanted? No. Using Light Weapon on the BBS should bring it into acceptable damage ranges, enough to crack SC on a simple combo at the very least. This train of thought came some testing done by someone here on the Wiki. Who and where I don't remember so if it's you who did such testing, just post and I'll give credit. And since you don't have points invested in luck anymore, now you can spread out a bit more and reach 45 VIT, 30 INT, and 40 MAG. At least, that's the idea. I guess, in a nutshell, this is just a possibly lame variation on the typical spellsword. I mainly did this page just to get feedback and bounce ideas off of more experienced players than me. (I borrowed the game for a week and started a BBS build without meaning to LOL; so not much gameplay experience here.) Anyways, if this build is a success and earns a general seal of approval, I may add some basic tips and textbook style progression for the new kids on the scene, along my (eventual) experiences with it. Enjoy! |
Blueblood Spellsword (SL 121-126)
Might be fun , you have 3 spell slots to play around with since 2 are taken up with LW .
Firestorm + BBS has to be fun :)
You dont even have the game & your posting builds. Thats insane LOL. How can you recall the base AR of a BBS ? Its 272 by the way. This build is ok ish. To get the most out of Light Weapon on BBS you need an Insanity Catalyst, but that would cut your MP by 50%, not leaving much room for Spells. If you use a Wooden Catalyst it will be less AR but you can use your Spells better. If you use a ToB the damage on your BBS will be LESS than the Wooden Catalyst, but you can use Miracles as well as Spells without switching catalysts. 30 Endurance is kind of low, especially if you use your Dragon Gaxe or NR. I imagine you may get more feedback from better PvP players than me, but i hope you make this build and enjoy it :)
I've spent a lot of time on the wiki and YouTube doing some research and like I said, I did have the game for a week. The last thing I did was forge the BBS. Anyways….
My thought was to use the Talisman of Beasts for Light Weapon, knowing it would result in less damage but it's that much less, I might have to use a wooden catalyst/ToG. But that means no backup weapon for when LW runs out or I just need a change of style.
I figured 30 END should be enough for a 5 hit combo instead of the full 6, which from my understanding is enough to crack SC and possibly outright kill. If I need more, I'll just stay at 40 VIT and go for 35 END.
It's a good idea on paper, but this build wouldn't work…sorry. You need at least 20 Luck to even consider using the BBS, and between that and trying to bring Intelligence and Magic up for Spells your stats are spread too thin.
If you're interested in the Straight Sword moveset, I could make you a build dedicated to either Moon or LW Knight Sword. But I'm sorry, this build won't work.

Ask my anything. About Magic, that is.
Making a build based off the Knight Sword isn't hard at all. Making a BBS spellsword; now that's a challenge. Sure, it doesn't have super damage but that won't stop me from playing it. If I really want a good BBS build, I'd make ggdoom's to the letter.
Like I stated, LW should push the damage into the acceptable range, say mid-300s. My understanding is that luck doesn't add crazy amounts of damage, maybe I'll need 6-7 hits instead of 5 hits. Fine. Put them in a stunlock and drop a HSA on them to finish them off. That's what makes up the difference; the spells.
What is this? Seriously… Let´s combine two builds that require a lot of dedicated stats and equipment! This can´t possibly go wrong.
Sure! I mean what could go wrong? Right!?
If you haven't noticed already, I'm not worried about maximizing the BBS damage but instead combining it with decent spells and Light Weapon.
I kind of set on making this character; my point of posting this was to see what other more experienced people thought of it. I like gimmicky builds. I just wanted to see if I could improve it in anyway.
Oh well… Thanks for commenting anyways.
Have you properly considered this? Let´s go over your stats and the equipment you need…
Vitality 40-45
Will/Intelligence 30
Endurance 30
Strength 18
Dexterity 18
Magic 40
Faith 18
Luck 7
This leaves you with 5 spell slots, 30 endurance which is low for a BBS and a lot of things you need to do.
Now let´s go over the things you need to use here:
-BBS
- Kris Knife, so your damage won´t be so bad you can´t kill dreglins
- Insanity Catalyst, to cast LW
- ToB for spells.
This leaves either no room for a shield or forces you to swap out BBS to cast a spell, which is not optimal but you can still work around it.
Into a more pressing matter, let´s go over your spells. You have 5 spell slots, 2 of which will be wasted on LW. This means YOU CANNOT EVEN USE THE ONLY COMBO THAT MAKES MAGES NOT SO BAD IN PVP. Also, notice how your spells will still do bad damage if you use them on the left hand while holding a BBS.
The reason why this is so bad is because both BBS builds and mages require you to have certain weapons in both your hands at all times, and stats to be able to use them effectively. This means they simply cannot work together, even putting every other disadvantage aside.
1. I believe 30 END is enough for a full 5 hit combo. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
2. Nick's spellsword has 45 magic; mine has 40 so with the monk's collar and kris blade, I shouldn't fall behind by much.
3. The iCat/ToB thing is still a problem; either I don't use a shield or I take a dip in LW effectiveness (about 30-50, forgot how much exactly)
4. By spell combo, what exactly? I'll still have firestorm or fireball/firespray or ignite/soul ray… I still have options. Worst case scenario; I drop LW and use Black Turpentine forever. But I'm not a mage by any sense of the word and thus won't play like one. In this case, the spells will complement the melée ability, combining combos with HSA or Ignite.
And what other disadvantages are there? Because these are all ones I've noticed and have thought on how to fix them.
Please also keep in mind I'm not just arguing for the hell of it but rather to try understand why this build is destined to fail. I seems sub-optimal but the best has been made and done with. I want something new.
Luck needs to be 20-30 to even consider using the BBS :/ MAG should be around 30 and the whole point of the BBS is that you sacrifice spells for powerful melee. You cannot effectively combine the spellsword and BBS builds at this SL. It is much more reasonable at a higher SL (150+).
.
like they said. luck is too low. take 20 out of magic and put it in luck. yay. now you have a GOOD build. neutral from me onlly because of low luck
This build would be nice. In fact it's like my build. BBS with LW and, for me, firestorm. Believe me, it actually would work…. IF THE LUCK WERE ABOUT 30
