Advice on killing Rydell

To give you a tad of background on why I think I am having trouble, I may have gone a tad too specialized for my first game and given he is rather strong against magic I am not doing enough damage on him.

Currently I am SL 61, my best damage dealing weapons are Crescent Falchion +1 and Moon Winged Spear +3. I also have the standard spells like Soul Arrow and Soul Ray, Flame Toss, none of the higher tiered spells like Firestorm or any of the clouds. My stats are something like vit 22, int 19, str 16, dex 16, magic 33, faith 12.

As you can see I am rather geared towards being a magic user, and all my weapons do great damage.. assuming the enemy is not strong against it. Does anyone have any tips on how I could take this pain in the but BP down a little easier?

Stand back and use a bow. He will move but just wait until he returns. Took quite a while but he doesn't have heal powers and was quite easy.

As a footnote I've killed all the BPs now and I'm not that great as a melee character. The only one which gave me trouble was Selen.

Essentially you're right. He gave me serious trouble when I first started playing this, since I joined during the bipolar Valentines event and ended up on PBWT.
I'd recommend trying to exhaust his stamina and turtling him with that spear. His pole is pathetic and he can roll away from most of your spells.

I also have the scraping spear, I debated trying to whittle down his pole to make it less harmful then trying to do some damage without getting killed in one hit (yes he currently kills me in one hit).

Scraping Spear is only useful for harrassing players in PvP if you feel like being a jerk. Using it on anything except the worker things in 2-1 and 2-2 for backstab piercing damage kills would be a waste compared to using another weapon.

I would say just hypermode with a bow, and it goes by pretty fast.

I'm pretty sure scraping spear doesn't destroy enemies armor unless you're playing PvP. I thought it might be useful against Garl Vinland or Biorr but I didn't notice a bit of difference (after hitting them each with it around 8-10 times) in the damage they were taking or the damage they were dealing.

Scraping spear is super <SNIPPED> in PvP. I remember when I first got this game the first or second BP that invaded used it against me. Destroyed every piece of armor I was wearing, the shield I had, the weapon I was using. I was sooooo <SNIPPED>. At that early in the game the 12-15000 souls that it took to repair all my stuff was a lot, and I wanted to choke him to death.

Yes, I know this might seem pedantic but it is casual use of such slurs that gets people offended very easily, and I wouldn't be doing my job of looking after this forum if I didn't set an example. Please watch your language in future, everyone. ^^

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I decided to try and up my flamberge to +6 and try the fight two handed.. (not enough strength to single hand it) and hopefully I will be doing enough physical damage to kill him. If that fails I will try the bow method.

this. You can kill EVERYTHING IN THE FREAKING GAME from poison cloud and patience. Rydell is no exception. Just make sure you have thiefs ring and graverobbers ring, and you can stand next to the BP pretty much as you cast the spell

I ended up changing my mind, used a Dragon Crescent Axe +3. I was able to kill after after 2 failed attempts, he still was able to one hit kill me, but at least I was doing damage to him this time.

1) As notch noted above, Poison Cloud + Thief's and/or Graverobber's Rings kills just about everything, if time is not a factor. Just bring a good book to read in-between castings.

2) Using one of several magic spells (Soul Arrow/Light, Flame Thrower, Fireball, etc.) from a safe distance and running when chased (while wearing the Thief's and/or Graverobber's Rings) is slightly faster. Rydyell will stop chasing you halfway down the corridor and go back to his original position. You can also combine 1) and 2).

3) If you're stuck with melee, use a knockdown weapon. I've had success marching in there with a Meat Cleaver and putting Rydyell on his back over-and-over until he died. Wear the Eternal Warrior's Ring, use the Total Protection spell if you have it, and bring enough Moon Grass and Spice to keep you going. Before your first attack, you can enchant the Meat Cleaver, and any time that he's down, you can eat Moon Grass, Spice, recast TP, or re-enchant your weapon, as long as you're quick. In fact, I've beaten every "named" Black Phantom in the game this way (including Garl and Ostrava). You can also combine 1) and 3).

4) I've also used a bow and arrows, as Andy_Xcite suggested above, but like using Poison Cloud, it takes a while, and you have to bring a lot of arrows, especially in NG+ and beyond. It works, though, especially with a +5 bow and Heavy (or better) Arrows.

I just did the old backstab trick. Let him chase you, then backstab when he turns to go back to his spot. Rinse and repeat.

i did anti magic field, i don't know if anyone else did that, but that was hella easy
