Hey , I did see this on your list of stuff to do with a maybe/maybe not variable attached to it, so I just wanted to say that I think it would be great if we switched it all to the NA terminology. That's my oppinion anyways, I would think that most of the users here are in North America am I right? Tell Stooge what you think everyone! So he and the admins can get an idea if it's a change worth doing or not, thanks!
Depends on who all is using what.. I guess we could poll to see who is using what version. It does make more sense to have it set to whatever the most people are using. I am using the NA version myself. Not sure about the bulk of the users though.
I prefer the terminology from the original English translation in the Chinese and Korean releases. When this wiki was created, it was based on those versions, and that's what a lot of us have always been used to. Atlus arrived late to the game (no pun intended), and I don't think we should change the terminology with each new release.
I have both versions (Asian and North American), and in my opinion, Atlus did a mediocre job on localizing the English. For every change that makes sense ("Soul Light" became "Soul Ray"), there's one that doesn't ("Flame Thrower" became "Flame Toss"). Also, the guide that came with the Deluxe Edition contains errors, and in the Art Book, Atlus couldn't even get the track listings correct for the soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, Atlus did a good thing in bringing the game to America and offering a Deluxe Edition, but the tweaks to the English translations of the menus and subtitles are hardly superior to the original. They're just different.
I understand that a lot of players have been exposed to only one version of the game, and that many of the new players (October 2009 forward) are used to the Atlus translation, but to change the terminology used in this wiki would seem like rewriting history. In essence, the wiki would lose its soul if it abandoned the original English translation. ;) Then again, I might be the only one who thinks/feels that way.
I certainly don't want to re-write history as it were in your depiction StefanieTN, but I would actually argue against your point that most of the changes they made in the translations make more sence now….to me at least. "Moving Soul Arrow" became "Homing Soul Arrow", "Slow recovery" became "Regeneration", "Will" became "Intelligence" and on and on. To me it seems like the ones they maybe didn't get quite right like Flame Toss are farther and fewer between.
I guess to me it would just seem to make more sence if most of the people coming here and using this wiki were using the NA version that it would use it's terms is all. I am perfectly happy still with it the way it is, because really it doesn't change a whole lot and after people figure out that the terminology is just slightly different, the usefulness is still the same either way. Love this Wiki either way it goes, just thought I would throw this out there is all guys!
I wonder if BramdKnown as Brand in N.A. Release would think it odd that he and his Keel SmasherKnown as Dragon Bone Smasher in N.A. Release were known by different names.
TIP Hover over the words Bramd and Keel Smasher.
Will that make everyone happy?
I have no idea if this works in browsers other then Firefox and IE 8. So don't get attached to the idea if I start getting reports that it is breaking stuff. It is just an HTML span so it should not break anything … it might not work, but shouldn't break anything.
We can also do this … BramdIn the NA Release his name is Brand
Ignore the colors, I'll fix that hellishly awful green after dinner. Good grief, looks like the adjudicator hocked a loogie up there.
Actually, it's "Brand" in the Asian versions, "Bramd" in the American (Atlus) version. ;)
I clicked on a link and it came up Brand and there is a picture of a dude holding the weapon, but I saw the dude and just made a stupid connection mentally. I think you guys are missing the point.
The pop-ups look fine, though. :)
It really depends on what part of the wiki you're referring to. If you're referring to the data tables and pages, then remember that we'll still want to include the original Asian translation for those of us who play on that version. Which ultimately means you'll just be switching the names in around.
I don't really see the problem here. I play on the NA atlus version but I thought it was actually pretty interesting to learn the original names of things in the game. Also the way the wiki is formated right now it tells anyone who plays the atlus version what the names are in both versions (but i like the pop-ups better) so that eveyone gets what they need to know. There isn't any real need to change it to the pop-ups… but they're still cooler.
