I don't do PvP ever but when I get invaded by a black phantom I need to be able to defend myself so I want to have a good weapon to carry around with me. I would like to hear your opinions on what a reliable PvP weapon would be and what you prefer to use.
There's no one best weapon, because it depends on too many factors. Generally, you want weapons that offer bonuses for your highest stats, but your Soul Level and playing style factor in, too.
For example, my Soul Level 19 Royal does very well as a Blue/Black Phantom with a Moon Winged Spear +5 and a Knight's Shield +10 or Dark Silver Shield +5. The spear gets a boost form her Magic stat, and she can attack with her shield up. She also uses a Baby's Nail +5 to inflict Plague, which can be very dangerous for enemy players at such low levels. My 63 Royal is fairly well-rounded with a slight emphasis on Magic, so her Moon Winged Spear +5, Moon Sais +5, and Phosphorescent Pole +5 are quite effective. Of course, both of those characters usually rely on Magic spells.
My 97 Temple Knight (high Strength & Faith) does well with a variety of melee weapons, including a Blessed Mirdan Hammer +5, Blessed Great Sword +5, Large Sword Of Moonlight +5, Istarelle +5, and the Meat Cleaver.
The Blueblood Sword is one of my favorite weapons for high-level balanced characters, but at lower levels, there are better choices, especially the Dragon+5 weapons and the North Regalia (540 damage with Pure White/Black character tendency).
What the hell? Of course your level 19 will do well in pvp with all that setup. At that level, most people are chugging around a cresent falchion +1 IF they're lucky.
Yeah if you are invading people at sl 19, you must be really bad, and seriosuly don't do that
If you invade people early in their career you might stop them from playing, making the demon souls community even smaller

I completely disagree, and throughout your posts, you continually display a lack of understanding of this game. First off, I help a lot of beginning players as a Blue Phantom at low levels, much more often than I invade. Besides, even when I invade at low levels such as 19, 44, 63, 90, that's part of Demon's Souls. If you can't handle being invaded, either summon some Blue Phantoms for help or play offline.
If you're ever going to get the most out of this game, you've got to escape all of your one-dimensional thinking.
Invading at level 19 isn't the issue. It's the invading with gear that normally isn't expected to be accessible at that level that I have a qualm with. Having a dark silver +5 suggests that you're supposed to have beaten 2-2, 5-3 AND have garnered five colorless demon souls by then. Moon +5 equates to having finished 3-2 if not 3-3. Unless you duped, deleveled or used some other backhanded means, it's very hard to imagine having weapons that can compare at level 19. Like I said, it's just not a fair playing field IMO.
well this is basically what i meant, at sl 19 it kinda pisses off players new to the game like when i only have a crescent flachion+1 on my first ever playthrough, and my opponent has an uber pwnage weapon like DBS and other weapons that are accesible early
Well the DBS is accessible. I was more pointing out how a +5 DSS AND a +5 Baby's nail suggests you already pretty much finished the game (which is quite possible at level 19) and have gear way better than most players at that level. It's just newb stomping at that point from what I can see rather than any "open minded" playing. I'm not saying this is how you probably choose to play Stefanie since you're a very helpful poster from what I can see. I'm just stating I fail to see the point of doing a level 19 pvp'er with that setup. Might as well go all the way with a dragon +5 knight sword, makoto +5 or NR. Any of those would probably one/two shot at that level.
Well, I don't want to get into a heated argument, but I respectfully suggest that your notion is… well-intentioned, yet misguided.
Online, Demon's Souls is not a fair playing field to begin with, and that's the point. If you prefer arranged duels by invitation, and you mutually agree to set some rules for reasonably even one-on-one matches, that's fine. But if you're just playing the game normally as a Host, Blue Phantom, or Black Phantom, anything goes (cheating aside, of course). It's designed to be random.
Not only can a 19 beat the game, I'm on NG++ with my 19 (without de-leveling). I've collected a lot of stones and upgraded many low-level weapons, but there are still a lot of weapons that I can't even use because of my low stats. But, if I use my earned, upgraded weapons in multiplayer, that's perfectly within the spirit of the game. Besides, a 19 character will often be playing against characters in their mid-to-high 20s, and I've run into a lot of other players in that range who are clearly not new to the game, many of whom have very good weapons.
Normally, I use my sub-100 characters to help other players as a Blue Phantom, but that's beside the point. No matter what, you're always going to have mismatches, even though you're in the same range. Players at levels 80-to-120 might've finished the game only once, but they could very well be playing with others who've finished the game twice or more, so naturally, the weapon upgrades won't be the same. That's not "fair," but it's perfectly legitimate, and it's the way the game is designed. If you've earned a weapon through normal game play, it's always appropriate to use it online.
Is it "fair" that a Black Phantom often has to fight against a Host and two Blue Phantoms? Is it fair that a Blue Phantom in NG could get summoned to a world in NG+7? No, of course not, but that's part of the game. It's not supposed to be fair in that regard. The level range restriction is the only equalizer that the game provides. If you're going to play online, you have to accept the fact that other players can be at various stages of the game or have finished the game several times. There's a quote from the film Unforgiven that summarizes the concept.
Little Bill Daggett: "You just shot an unarmed man!"
Bill Munny: "He should have armed himself, if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend."
That's the cold reality of Demon's Souls, and that's what makes it so much better than most games. Of course, we might just have to agree to disagree on that. :)
Fair enough =). I will agree that if you took the effort to earn all that at level 19, you should be able to use it. Those poor hosts =(
I think I have to agree with Steph on this one, even though I myself was not best pleased when I got invaded at level 15 (on a first time run through) and wasted by a +5 dragon Mirdan hammer. What I should have done was played in offline mode, not difficult to do, merely an oversight on my part, when i first began playing I was invaded and killed regularly being unfamiliar with the whole bp thing but it didn't put me off I was more like WHOA!! where did he get that gear from and where can I get some like it.
Although I can see the others points, I guess some people would be a bit miffed at getting invaded and owned without realising why and thinking its not fair, but hey DS is not fair, if they can't hack that then they shouldn't be playing cos they are gonna only get more hacked off when they meet other bosses and levels.
Just my opinion of course :o)
Mephistopheles was right about you……………
Meat cleaver is a really good weapon in pvp, but IMO the blessed great axe +5 is much better.
for pvp i think most ppl keep their sl at about 120, but at 120 there is no way the meat cleaver can outshine the blessed +5 great axe
every weapon has its counter, even if its only a very slight one. I think most used weapons are meat cleaver, LSoM, mirdan hammer, sais, and DBS. What i would bring with me before every fight is your normal pve weapon(mirdan hammer for me), and 1 or 2 weapons for pvp.
Use firestorm on invaders if you are a n00b…..
I use the cleaver a lot, and I've never lost to a BGA user in any bracket.
To be honest…which weapon is best is a question related mostly to build and personal preference. Asking which one was most feared though would perhaps get you a more poignant answer.
In response to that one…the +5 Blessed Mirdan/Miridian Hammer is the scariest thing you will ever encounter in the hands of a SL 120 PvP expert - Fear it! =S

You're right, that is definitely the scariest weapon to encounter. Especially when you know its power. It's the easiest weapon to use in the game 2-handed, it has amazing reach, it has tons of damage, and the fact that one hit=3-4 hits because of its combo.
wow the weapon calculator lead me to believe that the BGA would end up with 800+ attack, thats why i thought it was better, according to the new one, it wont end up with nearly that much
Not a fan of the meat cleaver in PvP. Too slow. I usually eat up Black Phantoms carrying it combining a simple ranged spell and some distance and then moving in close when I dodge a first attack. Moving Soul Arrow timed to break an opponent's guard and then quick strikes with a fast weapon has won a lot of battles. Meat cleaver eats so much stamina you have lost the battle if you miss once.
There is no one best weapon in PvP. You have to be flexible enough to adjust strategy to your opponent.
That said, I've been known to have the scraping spear as one of two weapons in the right. The sight of it tends to make an opponent hesitant to close, and you can keep your shield up. You may lose the battle but they pay a price. Its a good feel out weapon and then I will switch to my whatever for a change of pace and some damage creation.
I have seen awesome use of a Miridian Hammer in PvP against me. It appears to have an excellent balance between quickness and range. Sounds like Ilkar has encountered the same user.
Wow scraping spear, you do know that most frown upon the use of this weapon…….And 1 miss certainly does not lose the fight when using the meat cleaver
I'd actually argue that the Mirdan hammer is more frowned upon since it's so easy to use. Heck it's my default pvp weapon on any character.
I don't invade as a Black Phantom much so the Scraping Spear is more defensive in intention as intimidation. I just remember encountering it for the first time as a victim of a black phantom, and yeah, its a pisser. But if you're going to invade my level expect to pay the price. Pulling it out as a Blue Phantom against a black usually will lead to the Black choosing another target. Not only do you protect your soul level but you have the opportunity to flank and strike with your high power offensive weapon when he targets someone else. Sometimes a black phantom hunt becomes more of a competition between three co-op players for the kill and the souls after all. I've been known to linger behind and be third in a dog pile on the helpless black phantom to score that kill too. The scraping spear is in the game almost exclusively for PvP, so why frown upon it? Use it for its intended use. Fear is a huge weapon in PvP. The meat cleaver succeeds when the opponents intimidated by it, hesitates and gives up the initiative to the cleaver. When you're staggered you're now dead. If the scraping spear holds off your opponent from closing with you, suddenly you have options too, like healing or casting a spell, cycling to a needed spell or item, and dropping your shield to regain stamina. That "don't mess with me" factor may as well as the need to head to Boldwin to repair the damage very well keep a defeated BP from invading again right away too.
I wouldn't be so concerned about "fairness" or "reputation" in PvP, Killzone. The BP came in to mess you up, go ahead and mess him up back. That dynamic was intended when they put in the Black Phantoms in the first place. Its that dynamic that makes a good PvP duel so intense, and why I've never bothered with red summoning stones. Who wants a "friendly" PvP? If a duel gets drawn out, that scraping spear may be the deciding difference. I don't use it all the time but I keep it in my inventory.
yeah but it can be beat, and at 120 the MH is not cheap. Scraping spear makes you take a break from pvp-ing to gather souls and repair your items, which IMO is a real pain in the neck
Ah now i have got it. I thought the meat cleaver was worse than the blessed great axe+5 because its attack was much lower, but i just figured out that my faith was 40 at sl 120 making its attack not as devastating as the BGA. Now i know why the Meat cleaver is feared
Personally I roll with a purple flame shield lvl 9 (Vinland's shield in backup just case I face a magic user), with a scraping spear and the Large Sword of Searching as my primary. I stay light in order to roll around and I destroy opponents by wearing them down. If they manage to get a hit my regen ring fixes me up nicely. Many people think I'm crazy for using the large sword, but it's quick and strong and goes well with my high endurance. Regarding people whining about the scraping spear, it's a game, my goal as black phantom is to mess you up, break your stuff to weaken you and usually get you a little scared, then keep the pressure on.
Dual wielding Uchigatana +5 upgrade for your stats is one of the best setups for pvp. I personally like the dragon bone smasher +5 for range and knock down power. The blueblood sword for speed. Then i would have to say the Great Axe or the Mirdan Hammer which both can be upgraded to get bonuses off of your stats. The Meat Cleaver is the hardest hitting weapon in the game with maxed out stats. And the First Rule in Fight Club don't use scraping spear, acid cloud or this is what will happen to u.

Well, it's okay if you get invaded. Because they're asking for it.
