Is anyone else confused about the fact that the Old One is actually a giant ancient sea cucumber made of wood? I was under the impression that the menacing, two-jawed dinosaur dragon from the opening cinematic was the Old One; the one featured on the disc art and PS3 background. And is anyone else left wishing you could actually fight a real boss to beat the game? I mean, I could strip my character naked, offhand the makoto, and two hand a slave's shield and kill King Allant. You go through all the insanity of the game, and poof. It's over. I wanted to pound that beast to slumber, not have the maiden talk to it like it's a big pet, then touch some light, and roll the credits. Can I get a witness?
The boss before it was the ending. The Old One is merely the credits. If he was difficult, and you happened to be there with the wrong gear, what would you do as you have no access back to the Nexus.
I do wonder what happened to that dragon on the trailers. I mean it might be the blue dragon but its head is differently shaped with 2 sets of jaws i mean where did that thing go? I was looking forward to a huge duel with it.
You actually can get back to the nexus, there is an archstone near where you first appear in the desert-place. I kinda liked the ending, getting to pound someone in after getting pounded on for so long!
wait, are you serious? I really want to go back there and explore a bit, the localed in the game is getting a bit bland
I see the design of the Old One differently. I surmised that the Old One is some metaphor of Nature. Assuming it is a Beast referred to by the Talisman of Beasts (note plural), the design plays along the divide between Creationists (God) and Evolutionists (Nature). The fact the latter is played out as Demon's sets the general tone on whose side the designer wanted players to be on, although God doesn't seem to be present to help (only THREE useful Miracles? Thanks a lot.).
Whee, butterflies!
i read somewhere on the wiki that the Old One was referring to the tree of life. I'd say the game is a little bit racist in how they make so few miracles useful, demon's being
superior, and how spells are uber useful against everything. i get that From Software is a Japanese country, but I kind of feel like religion is getting bashed indirectly…..
I don't agree : it's alittle bit like light and dark side of the force. The dark side seems more brutal, more efficient…
But in Demon's Souls case, althoug there seem to be less useful miracles, I think on the contrary that they counter-balance the magic spell quite well : wrath of god is a a little bit less powerful… but it can penetrate walls. As for the rest of the miracles, they are support spells (if you have HIGH mp regen with phosphorescent pole+5 and other regen items it can be more interesting than wasting items). You also have to keep in mind that you only have one stat to push to use miracles (faith), where, for magic, you need both "magic" and "intelligence" (to open more magic slots).
One of the key miracle is "Anti-magic field" (terrific in PVP and wherever there are magic users : the Chtulhu prison guardians in Tower of Latria ? as dangerous as a sheep). Same for the banishing miracle (when you DON'T want to be invaded : you just send the BP back to his world without even bothering).
On the other side, of course there are more offensive spells, but I find many of them are too much alike (soul arrow, fireball, ignite, etc.) and not that many are useful (if you use soul ray, what's the point in all the fire throwing spells ?). In the end, for the offensive spells, I only use Firestorm, Soul ray and homing soul arrow (and poison and death cloud on occasion, but it's a little bit different).
I was fine with it. You already fought the badass demon version of King Allant in 1-4; I think it's no coincidence he's the toughest boss. What's left of the real king is a cautionary tale about what happens to mortals who try to claim too much power; it fits well with the story.
As for fighting the Old One, I would have been disappointed if you could. It's one thing to kill demons, but that is an absurdly powerful monster/god. It is chaos itself. Putting it back to sleep should be the best you can hope for; that's not something a mortal can ever overcome.
If you'd have to beat this boss i'd take it that it would be something like Shadow of the Colossus but with no place for errors…. it would be fun but i think that the ending fits with the storyline perfectly. I wasn't expecting much of a narration in DS but I really enjoyed how it closed and started over.

Souls of the lost…
I was a bit disappointed too, but the fight against False King Allant was so epic that I had enough.
Looking at them both again, I could definitely see how that big guy in the opening is the dragon god, but it still looks a little off to me. He looks more dinosaurish, and what the crap is he doing in the boletarian palace? Isn't he encased in a lava chamber on the other side of the country?
You're right Reaverlord i would have totally digged the last boss fight, if it was similar to the boss fights of Shadow of The Collosus. What i would have done was make the
Old one a very huge beast. The battle would have started with The Old One in a stationary position, shooting soul rays and whatnot at you. After attacking him a bit,
taking out like 1/4 of his health bar, i would have made the Old One stand up and start moving, getting crushed by his feet would either kill or take your second chance
away. Since the Old One is not the most mobile creature, i would have made his legs ladders, and bring the battle on to his actual body. He would spawn a couple of
demon's, similar to the way the reaper does with those phantom things. After dispatching those, I would make the Old One's wood-like skin vulnerable to hits from your
weapon and that would take out another 1/4, the battle would then descend to his head and inside his body, where you would meet an old and tired King Allant ready
to help you take his Kingdom back, After dispatching The Old One you can choose whether to kill the Maiden who attempts to clean up after her "pet", or kill her and
King Allant for 2 souls worth 200, 000 each.
That's a very detailed response…lol. I would have liked to see something like that, but no, it comes in for a landing on the daytona beach of time and space, she tells it to "be good", (REALLY? You're telling the ancient, soul-devouring beast that unleashed a freakin' army of demons upon the world; the thing that is supposed to be the the embodiment of evil and greed…. you're telling it to behave?) and then you go in his mouth, break some trees, and kill a pitiful salamander man made of tar.
Personalty I would go so far as to make it like the tutorial. You only get one chance starting when Soulbrand appears. If you die: game over, welcome to NG+. The maiden never follows you in, there's no fog behind where you fight, and your only option would be to leave they way you came in. Once you exit you get an epic boss intro cut scene, and the finial fight (this being the only fight that does not become harder in NG+ and after, but it would be like False king NG+7 to start with), that would be like the one killzone outlined (minus the Allant part).
If you die you get cut scene 1 where your spirit drifts by the Maiden in Black where it then gets consumed by The Old One, and a few words get spoken by the Maiden about how as strong as you were, you were still just another lost soul and begins to lull him back to sleep by herself. When you start NG+ you get Allant's soul worth 100k or so as well as the Red Eyes stone.
If you manage to win, you get cut scene 2 where you walk away from the collapsed Old One towards the Maiden where she says something about how your living proof that humans can ascend to a higher being using the power of demon's without becoming corrupt like Allant became and how the Nexis will no longer bind your soul. She then begins to lull him back to slumber with you standing behind her. Congratulations you get Allant's Soul (100k), Old One's soul (200k), and the Maiden in Black's souls (60k/soul sucker spell) and the gold trophy as well as 70-150k souls from simply killing him.
I would have kept it the same, but add in a hidden 3rd ending where instead of lulling him to slumber, you get to battle the boss from the intro cutscene, consisting of aspects from every arch demon, fire breath until you reach him (slashing him to death), followed by a battle with a black phantom, leading to where he takes the sky and have to use ranged weapons, or the Storm Ruler, Followed by an NPC fight (new one)
Each part would give you a certain # of souls and a special demon's soul each worth 200k
You would need to have gone through both ending before you could do this
