Why Can't I Upgrade?
Neither of the Blacksmiths let me upgrade my Large Brushwood Shield. It doesn't appear in the list of things to upgrade. Is there something I'm supposed to do beforehand?

uh… the obvious thing here is…. have you beaten 2-2 and given the red hot demon's soul to Ed? If you have not, he will basically be a second boldwin. You need to get the Red Hot Demon's Soul, then talk to him several times till his dialouge begins to repeat, then leave, then talk to him again, and he will ask for the soul. Give it to him, and you will now have the ability to create new weapon upgrade branches, and use demon souls in your upgrades. Just hope you didn't use the Red Hot Demon's Soul, or you'd have to wait till New Game + to get it again.
A Colorless Demon's Soul is a Demon's Soul. Hence you still need to give Ed a Red Hot Demon's Soul, even if you're in New Game +.

You can't actually make anything beyond the basic upgrades till you give a red hot demon's soul to Ed (think cresent weapons, moon weapons, blessed weapons, etc.) None of those require demon's souls, only corresponding stones and a sufficiently upgraded standard weapon (usually at a +6 or so).
Sorry I forgot about this discussion. I beat 2-2, but I don't remember if it was before or after this problem. I can't check until Friday, but I'll make sure to and get back to you guys. Thanks.
