I always wondered about this. If she's not the queen, who could she be
I highly, highly doubt it. The Once Royal Mistress seems a bit shallow, first of all…going on about how she used to be rich. She doesn't in any way depict the strong, proud woman the Queen of Latria was made out to be. Second, the Archstone descriptions say the queen was lost, and the Fool's Idol was created so the prisoners wouldn't be so restless. Or something like that.
So…no ^_^ She's probably just some random Noble's Wife.

Ask my anything. About Magic, that is.
i disagree with the last statement…used to be rich…sounds queen-like to me…and she doesn't depict the strong proud woman she used to be because she is imprisoned with a bunch of lunatics…let's see you try and keep that composure for long without going nuts….and yes the archstone said the queen was lost…but if you look closely at the mistress' face…she appears to be wearing a mask or some sort…maybe concealing herself? who knows….this point is the only flawed point i make
so in my opinion…it's POSSIBLE…but not for sure…but i believe she is
I zoomed in, I thought her face was disfigured from torture or something. I wouldn't think that she is the Queen of Latria since I heard somewhere in game that the Queen was also a great magic user(The Soul Ray being one of the queens basic spells) and youd think she would do more to help you like Bior did other than selling you items.
"What is love? Baby don't hurt me no more"
If the queen can do magic, y not attack her and see if she does? If she does, then she is the former queen, if not then that confirms it, good luck on that. Oh, and since her face is disfigured(either a mask or just her face) then that means she was possibly put through torture like the other prisoners(although it still baffles me as to how some of em survived the iron maidens when u go to open them for loot).

she's stuck in a place with crazy monsters and mind flayers…if you couldnt beat those mind flayers when you first started…what makes you think a queen could?
she may know magic…but that means little when those guys can paralyze you and stab you to death, also since shes gone mad she could have forgotten her magic, since you need INTELLIGENCE to MEMORIZE spells
all in all im to stubborn to say shes not the queen…i still think she is… there is so much evidence to back it up,
her being locked in there in the first place
mask covering her face so you dont compare it to fools idol
she used to be noble (queen status most likely)
she's crazy for being stuck in there with psychos so of course she cant be all queen like and poised
list goes on
she probrably isnt the queen cuz if im recalling right the monk created prison to lock the queen there since he hated her and so i dont think that the queen would be in a normal cell she would probrably be on a max security cell or dead.
lol well if u were locked up in a cell guarded by an inhuman octopus head because of ur husband going mad and wanting revenge and locking up ur family in cells, hearing their crys of pain, takeing over the place with pure evil, u wouldnt exactly be happy and in a good mood now would u(not to mention suffering in pain for all eternity supposedly and being used to keep that mechanical heart pumping for more life extension of the old monk)?

All the evidence pointing towards the Once Royal Mistress being the Queen is circumstancial, and as others have said before me the Queen is reknowned for her use of magic, something the Mistress does not exhibit.
I'll also leave it to you to look up the meaning of a 'Royal Mistress' or 'Concubine' to put it a different way.
Using the principle of Occam's Razor, in a situation such as this the most simple explanation must therefore be the correct one.

Ok do this test to all those who say she is not the queen, attack the mistress to the point where she will attack u, and see if she uses magic, then that would confirm she is the once great Queen of Latria. But then again she could or could not, but basically evidence presented by others say she IS the former Queen of Latria. There is more than 1 way to figure out the identity of a person or thing.

I killed the once royal mistress today. After I attacked, I wanted to see if she would go Soul Light on my a$$. She didn't, and I gave her plenty of time and space to do it. She took out a dagger which feebly bounced off my shield. I got 46 souls for killing her.
Maybe she lost her catalyst. She definitely could not have been low on spice.
No, it wouldn't confirm it at all. That's like saying any female magic user could be the queen, which would (thanks to acmueller) even make YURIA more likely.

lol just pointing out that I can just as easily be wrong on the attack and see if she casts magic, as its said there is more than 1 way to tell the identity of a person or thing, not by violence(most of the time).

ok so the royal mistress has to cast magic to be the queen?
1.she has a mask covering her face…suspicious?
2.she is a ROYAL MISTRESS
3.she sells spices
4.she could have become insane from being in a prison with psychos….you need MEMORY to memorize spells…and im pretty sure that if you went insane you probably would not care for remembering spells
5.like somebody pointed out…she could have dropped or lost her catalyst…its a prison too…so it could have been taken
there's probably more to say to prove it…but thats all i can think about right now
Not to mention I just checked the dialogue below and can corroborate it, you people evidentally don't know the meaning of the word 'Mistress'.

Which means that therefore…she isn't the Queen.
Thank you. xD

She can't be the queen. If you use the talk function, she says:
"The queen banished her insane husband from the lands. He returned with a mystical garb and imprisoned her…"
Or something along those lines. So, unless she's one of those crazy people from Lord of the Rings who talk in third person, it's not her. Just a mistress.

*starts to chuckle then laughs* haha lol I wasn't sure I should or not to point out mistress also meant back then hooker. Wow, a sexual reference in the game, *chuckle* +1 for the maker of the game putting a small hidden reference in there.

I don't know if this has happened to anybody else, but in my most recent playthrough, she mentions that she was once married to royalty. Also, when I go to buy something from her, it says Once Royal Wife at the top of the screen. I'll go back and get a picture of it.
Sorry, I meant Former Royal's Wife. Here are the pictures.

Depends on the version of the game you have.
That of course is no proof she is the Queen, you can be the wife of Royalty and be married to anyone in the royal line in question.

I have the US version of the game. Whenever I've visited her before, she's been the Once Royal Mistress.
I'm not saying this is proof. I just happened to be going through 3-1 the day after I came across this thread, so I thought I would mention it.
I was going to say like Anorack, Once Royal Mistress I think means she was once a Royal's Mistress. She is a lady of ill-repute but in many a palace they were given high status. Courtesans or consorts.
And, the first time I played the game I killed her. I had played Dead Space where there was creepy singing and her singing bothered me. And I read lots of messages that said attack or true love ahead and oops, off with her head. She never got a chance to attack me.
Another question might be why she wants to stay there a bit longer as she says. Twisted, I think, but then all of the vendors are. Freaky woman in the swamp, Patches, etc.
