Hey, not much he will be a cheesy AI controlled goon who constantly chases you down. get a fast weapon and go to town. Just be careful he can parry and make sure you can roll good to avoid the homing soul arrows. This guy gave me a fairly difficult time in offline NG+, mainly because I am not the greatest melee-er.
I finally beat him with a DarkSilverShield +3 in my left hand, the anti magic field activated at all times, and the Dragon Bone Smasher +5 as my main weapon in my right hand, with the Talisman of Beasts to re-cast AMF when I had time to do so.
Bash him down with your DBS, hit him on the ground a couple times, be sure to leave yourself some stamina, wait for him to rise and then to either attack you (block / parry with shield, hit him while he is open) or get stuck on a chair, knock him down again, smash him on the ground a couple of times, rinse, repeat.
I am sure this is doable with any other weapon in the game, using this strategy, but weapons with knockback/down are awesome as they give you some breathing room to heal / recast AMF as this guy is ALWAYS up in your face otherwise.
the thing is I am using spellsword build. I am using moon uchi +4 and I do him 60 damage -.-". all my hope is just soul ray does 286 damage. I was thinking that there is someone play as the black phantom. and surprisingly, I met the same guy over and over again. darn it.. it's hard to kill him..
Yes second chance works on him(well you in particular) dont feel bad i firestormed him once, for a whole 30 or so damage LOL.
I was like wtf was his armor. the firestorm didnt do any shit to him too.. lmfao.. finally I figured that that was AI and I start spamming soul ray just before he hit me with the stupid claws. oh well.. I wasted a lot of grass and spices.. its all good now.. lmfao! let me add you to my psn.
Do you have anti magic field?
If not, then yeah, the battle becomes a little bit more challenging…buy by the point in the game where you fight Old Monk, you SHOULD have anti magic field.
And yes, second chance will revive you when fighting against old monk.
Honestly, if you have to fight both him AND his magic, just keep your distance, carry maybe a shield in your left hand and your magic catalyst of choice in your right, block his attack, fire a spell off at him, roll or just keep circling to avoid homing soul arrow, it's not very accurate if you are always on the move.
But yeah keep your defense up, move around a lot, even with 60 damage a swing from your uchi you should be able to wear him down if you are careful and patient.
I have not played PvP yet so I have had to develop some pretty crazy strategies to beat every boss in the game with no help from anyone, ever.
Shield and spear is always a great choice, especially in PvE, if you just need constant defense AND the ability to still attack.
i just killed him if I use anti-magic field, I'll be the one that got screwd since I am half magician and my moon uchi wont do any shit to him. I just spammed bunch of soul ray. I carry adjudicator +5 to regen my hp meanwhile. I ate his 4 homing soul arrow, my health from full bar became 1/8". lol.. at the end! I WON!

Oh yes, he can be a pain. I use the chairs to keep distance, he won't let you escape so easily, hehe.

ya.. all I had to do was spamming bunch of soul ray and keep distance. watch for the homing soul arrow though. it hurted so bad.
The monk offline is pretty easy, all he does mainly is chase u about and does hits that can be blocked and can be countered with lunging and swipe attacks………. not to mention if u wield graverobber's ring, that BP can lose track of u and u can just cast poison cloud and he be killed with patience…..

why would you want to kill him slowly with poison cloud for about 20 mins when you could just attack him until he dies for like 5 minutes

You get sticky white stuff on this bad boy, and two-hand it like a baseball bat.
The Old Monk has about as much chance winning against you as the Flamelurker making a snowball with his bare hands.

I didn't know people had this much trouble with good old Chauncey. I've never had any issues with him— just poked him to death with a BBS as punishment for his rebounds on my shield. And as for the Moving Soul Arrows? Run sideways and they never hit.
