I've never heard of it, but I just read a post of someone using an Cloud and accidently killing a NPC merchant, probably at 2-1. Can you as a Black Phantom, invade and kill other's NPC's making it hard for them to get certain items? I know you can kill their Crystal Geckos (a dirty move to say the least), but I've never heard of killing their NPC's/merchants.

Probably not since all NPC's you see in another players world are shown as a ghost/fog. Even as a blue phantom you can't kill NPCs or the Old King. As shown in this video.
