Left handed weapons?

Summary:

what do they do/what is the purpose?

i am trying to get good with a countering so i am using weapons in the left hand so i picked the shotel in the left hand and a straight sword in the right. but the shotel is mercury. so my question is, what do all the other weapons do in the left hand, does the shotel poison when i swing the straight sword and does it add any extra damage when i swing the great sword?

left handed weapons are for dual wielding mostly. They only do damage when you swing them. They don't add to the damage of the right handed weapon. but if you do have regeneration abilites (health/Faith Crecent/Mana) then just having them equipped you'll get the benefits, same as shields even if you two hand the right hand weapon with a shield. However having weapons equipped that increase your stats benefit will also work even if you don't attack with them i.e. the Kriss Knife for magic damage.

ok thanks that helped a lot. but one more question. why do people use two katanas? whats the benefit?

The animation of katana's allows for combo's when dual-weilding. There is no delay between swings as there is dual weilding other weapons making it an effective choice. As far as I know katana's are the only weapon that have a fluid dual weilding combo.

Left handed weapons will usually have one attack move, and one guard or parry move (depending on weapon type).
Right handed shields will have several attack moves, and when 2-handed they will have 1 guard and some attack moves (if I remember correctly).
Large shields 2-handed will give you a "tower knight" shield slam move :)
