What "good" armour depends on your personal standpoint and playstyle. Personally, I like to be able to do fast rolls, which I know the priest cannot do in their starting armour having started a character as a priest. They do the turtle on it's back roll. Also, you will find, the differances in "stronger" armour vs "weaker" armour is so very minor in practice that you will probably just end up using a lighter set anyways just to be able to roll fast, which is probably the most important thing in this game is the ability to roll out of the way of an attack.
Also you will find "heavy" armours, such as gloom, brushwood, dark silver, etc, etc, all have a stam penalty to them. Meaning your stamina refills slower than with armours like black leather and other light armours. This isn't that much of a differance in PvE, but, in PvP, getting that full guage of stamina faster than your opponent means a whole lot.
