Straight Sword

Straight Sword have the same moveset as Axes and Hammers for the most part, but they also have a strong piercing Attack and a running Slash.

It's worth noting that when using a Straight Sword, they have a unique follow up to their Strong Attack (R2). If you press R2 at any point during the leaping forward thrust animation (while wielding with one hand), you will follow up with an upward vertical slash. If your opponent is already staggered and/or easy to hit, this can be quite a devastating combo. Also, this works while wielding with both hands. Pressing R2 at any point during the first right-to-left sweep, you will follow up with another sweep from left-to-right.

1 Handed
R1 — R1 horizontal Swipe
R2 — R2 heavy piercing Thrust > upwards Slash The initial R2 delivers the unique piercing Attack of Straight Swords

Backstep or Run — R1 running overhead vertical Chop
Forward + R1 Push.

Extra Large Sword

Almost every hit will knock back a human sized enemy. You can't combo like the Straight Swords, since there is a backswing during the combo that is useless. Instead you should use your R1 attack, then wait a moment for the combo to break, and R1 again. Waiting between combos is easy as the knockdown effect from the R1 attack gives you time, assuming you connect. Timing is key.

The backswing may seem useless at first but after some practice it can be used to quickly attack a rushing opponent when you are surrounded and fighting others as it will hit front and back. It is also extremely useful against a stunned/slow moving boss to add in that one more needed hit to break a defense or hit it before it can recover. In any case, if an extra large isn't one of your main weapons, the backswing will feel silly but if you do frequently use one, learn to use the backswing, it can turn a battle if used right.
